The Critter Cottage opened on Monday, July 23! Vicky’s Pet Connection has teamed up with Mel’s Feed & Pet Supply in the Critter Cottage venture. VPC will be doing cat and dog adoptions and Mel will be running the retail side of things.
Some cats available for adoption will be at the Critter Cottage all of the time. Right now there are six in each of the two cat rooms. They’re allowed to roam freely in the rooms rather than living in crates. Each room as a big cat tree that serves as a scratching post as well as a place to hang out and sleep. There is some furniture, beds, toys, and of course a couple of litter boxes as well.
The cats at the Critter Cottage get a lot of attention from those that visit the store as well as from volunteers that come and play with them. Right now there are two 13 year old girls that spend a lot of their summer vacation days playing with the cats.
I spent the day at the Critter Cottage yesterday. I learned how to use the register and looked around so that I could familiarize myself with the products being sold. I learned about how Mel got started having her own store. She’s an advocate of proper nutrition for cats and dogs. She also sells horse and chicken feed so she’s familiar with farm animals.
Dogs will not be kept at the store. But they will be there during adoption events and for special adoption meetings. When I’m there for the day if I have a foster dog that is behaved enough to hang out with me he or she will come along. Yesterday our current foster dog Betty was at the store.
Those involved with the Critter Cottage are now in the process of getting the word out that we’re officially open. It’s the hope of everyone that people will be able to learn about animal adoption and rescue as well as nutrition from visiting us.
I’m not sure if it will help but I watched a video on MSN today about a young girl who drove 10 hours to adopt a dog. She found the dog on http://www.petfinder.com
Perhaps you can get some exposure for Critter Cottage there.
I recently had someone drive 10 hours one way to adopt a dog we were fostering for Vicky’s Pet Connection. The Critter Cottage is listed on the VPC info page on Petfinder and our actual homepage. So that should also help spread the word. Petfinder’s a great place to find rescue groups and look for specific breeds.
