Vicky’s Pet Connection has many “good saves” throughout the year. Pregnant dogs, sick dogs, and those who have been at the shelter for a long time. This is Nikkie. She had been at the county shelter since the middle of November. Picked up by animal control as a stray no one looked for her. Vicky [...]

We fostered Peanut in July 2005. We was about six weeks old when we first brought him in. He was brought into the shelter. It’s unknown why he was without littermates and a mom. He was very small weighing under five pounds.
We had him for about a week until he was placed with another litter [...]

Starting in 2008 I would like to post a photo each week that is dog related. It may or may not be taken during the week that I post.
I present Beacon and Haven at the business the end of December. We stopped in to change some lights and brought the dogs with us. They’ve both [...]

Toward the end of October we watched one of our former foster dogs for a few days. I’ve kept in touch with her mom who was going to be out of town on business. She asked if Andrew and I would watch Amber. Amber was one of our favorite foster dogs from [...]

Last month Andrew and I fostered Teddy. He was a returned dog. Originally he was adopted last fall when he was about 10 weeks old. A retired couple adopted him. The husband had a stroke and lost movement on one side of his body. His wife needed knee replacement surgery this summer. A neighbor kept [...]

This past weekend Vicky’s Pet Connection (VPC) sponsored a spay/neuter clinic for low income families in Kent County Michigan. This is the second clinic in the county within the past six months. By the end of the year a neighboring county will also have had two of these clinics.
The goal is to help control the [...]
#43 – On Ellen DeGeneres…

The story of Ellen DeGeneres giving away a dog to her hairdresser because it didn’t get along with her cats is old news now. But should it have been news in the first place? I’ve got neutral feelings as far as Ellen goes as a celebrity and person. I don’t go out of my way [...]

A couple of weeks ago we went to the beach with Beacon and Haven. Since the dogs are able to swim and fetch in a river near our house we’ve been slacking on going to the Lake Michigan beach where dogs are allowed.
The weather was sort of rainy and very windy at the beach. Temps were [...]
#41 – Are You Smarter than Your Labrador?

Andrew and I often talk about how smart our dogs, or any dog for that matter, really is. People don’t give dogs credit for being able to figure things out, having emotions, and having intelligence. Like humans, dogs have differing personalities and smarts. Today I write about Haven who is a stinker [...]

Last weekend Andrew and I took Haven to Shaggy Pines Dog Park to use a coupon for a free visit. We used this opportunity to meet up with a dog we fostered. I’ve kept in touch with Amber’s mom. In fact we’re watching Amber for a few days next month.
While we were there we saw [...]
